Witches' Sabbat

Early 18th Century copperplate engraving depicting a witches sabbath. The devil worshippers are banqueting on babies and performing somersaults before the devil who is seated at center.
From the second edition published in 1735 of Laurent Bordelon's 'L'Histoire des Imaginations Extravagantes de Monsieur Oufle'. (The Tale of the Extravagant Imaginings of Mr. Oufle). This satirical work tells the story of a Mr. Oufle who reads so much about ghosts, witches, devils that he begins to have all sorts of strange visions. Mr. Souffle is shown here bottom left observing the bizarre sabbath scene accompanied by a jester.
Condition: Considerable wear with creasing and spotting as shown. The sheet has been affixed at the corners to another old sheet of paper.
