The Swiss artist and graphic designer Max Bucherer was born in Basel in 1883 and studied in Munich and Paris. He taught at the "Kunstgewerbeschule" in Munich and also at well-known and innovative ""Debschitz-Schule" school of art in Basel. Students at the school included Ernst Ludwig Kirchner, Sophie Taeuber-Arp

Bucherer was a close friend of the author/artist Hermann Hesse. Hesse is believed to have based the "glass bead ball game" in his famous novel "Das Glasperlenspiel" on a game of ideas involving optics, mathematics and music created by Bucherer. Bucherer's game was based on the work of his wife Als Feustel, whose theory of musical and color scales is mentioned in the book's description of the glass bead ball game.
