Luigi Lucioni was born, 1900, in Malnate, Italy, a small town in the Italian Alps near the Swiss border.

 

Lucioni's family immigrated to the United States when Lucioni was just 11, and the young man later studied at Cooper Union and the National Academy of Design where William Auerbach Levy taught him the art of etching.

 

Lucioni divided his time between an old farm he purchased in Stowe Vermont - and where he spent his summers - and a studio in New York where he spent the winter. He loved the Vermont landscape and was at one time considered that state's painter laureate.

 

Lucioni also loved the opera and painted portraits of some of its great stars, including Arturo Toscanini.
