Children Reading a Fairy Tale

This charming image shows a cluster of children around a nun, who is reading a well known German fairy tale to them from a large illustrated book.

The story being read can be identified as the German Fairy Tale Vom klugen Schneiderlein - The Clever Little Tailor - one of the German Fairy Tales collected by the brothers Grimm. We know this since the artist has engraved across the top of the image words from the story's happy end: " das tapfere Schneiderlein aber bekam die Königstochter zur Frau " (The clever little tailor won the kings daughter as his wife).

Three fanciful figures from the fairy tale - the princess, the tailor holding scissors and a bear - are lightly sketched in the upper right hand corner - a prince.

Bruno Heroux was born in in Leipzig, and trained at that city's Art Academy and later in life would also become a professor there. He is known for his paintings and his original etchings and lithographs. Heroux lived in Paris from around 1900 to 1910, and exhibited his paintings and prints with the Salon des Artistes Francais.
